A message from Dr. Genco to Cranbury School students.

Good Afternoon Cranbury School. I hope everybody is having a great weekend. I just finished a crash course with mr. Nichols on how to use QuickTime video so I speak to you virtually and I think I'm ready to go. There is someone who is not upset that I am home every day and that is my dog Simba. Simba is a 15 year old Bichon Poodle mix and he has not left my side. I have seen the many of you working with your pets this past week through videos and photos. Animals are so comforting and times like these and they're so much fun too! Everything happened so quickly before you left that I wanted to check in and see how you were doing first. I wanted to tell you just how proud we all are of you. In this new situation, your teachers are sharing your work with us and we can see that you are doing your very best. So thank you for demonstrating the 3 R's at home, just like you do at school. Lots of things look different right now. Your classroom is now in your house. Your parents may also be working from home. Your dog could be barking while you're working and parents could be on conference calls in the next room. I'm sitting right now at my dining room table, which is now also my office. So the first thing I wanted to talk to you about is the importance of routine. Here's my routine. I get up and have breakfast, login to post my attendance, look at all the lessons scheduled for the day and then participate in. Make sure you stick to a routine just like you do at school. Routines are good. They make us feel better and more productive. Your parents have always been your first teachers as well this is totally new for them too, so listen to them and learn from them as you all develop new routines. The second thing I wanted to talk to you about is safety. In school we have safety drills all the time. I found on Google today a simple Public Service message that we can all remember called Do the 5 to stay healthy. The first one is hands - wash them. And wash them for 20 seconds. Hopefully you have a favorite song by now to wash your hands to. Two, is your elbow  - cough into it. Three your face. Don't touch it. I never really realized how much I touch my face until I was told that I couldn't touch it anymore. Four is space. Keep a safe distance from people - six feet or more And 5. Stay-at-home. Number 5 is really important right now.  Chief Varga and I talk everyday and he noticed that there were a lot of groups of students out in the community. We need you to stay home to keep every safe and healthy. This is your time to embrace technology to its fullest extent. It is important to stay connected with friends, but in a safe way. So consider FaceTiming a friend, sharing videos or other virtual interactions like Google meet. I'm doing this with my own friends and family and it's working really well. Which brings me to the third thing that I wanted to talk to you about. We all need daily inspiration. Think about things that inspire you everyday and let's share them with each other. I will be inviting our Student Council and Peer Leaders to take a lead role in making this happen. I have created a new email address called inspire@cranburyschool.org I want us all to be in touch by sending pictures or videos of things that inspire you to this email address. It can be as simple as you reading to your pet a poem you wrote working on your computer, playing a song on your instrument, sharing a recipe or some artwork. Sharing acts of kindness, the possibilities are endless. I heard this weekend that some friends were writing messages in chalk on their driveways. Chalk talk is inspirational! There is one thing that is for sure, we can all stay connected and we are all here for you just in a different way. One last thing.  Challenges also create opportunities and overcoming hardships makes us stronger. Let's all take this opportunity to be kind to ourselves and to each other. Every action we take creates more opportunities for great things to happen. So have a week of learning and send me those pictures with your parent's permission of course. We'll talk again soon.
