Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)

MTSS is is a framework of supports and interventions to improve student achievement. It is based on the three tier prevention logic of Response to Intervention (RTI) and a set of core principles, which include a foundation of strong district and school leadership, a positive school culture and climate, and family and community engagement.

NJTSS builds on Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) and gives schools structure to meet the academic, behavioral, health, enrichment and social/emotional needs of all students. As such, the MTSS team serves as our interdisciplinary team of professionals within the school environment who come together throughout the school year to formulate coordinated services and team delivery systems to address the full range of student learning, behavior, social, and health problems in the general education program. A classroom teacher, or the student’s parent/guardian(s), may request assistance from the MTSS team, which consists of the MTSS Coordinator, the teacher requesting assistance, an administrator, and parent(s), as well as staff members from support services (guidance, nurse, child student team, speech, occupational therapist, or academic support) as appropriate. In an MTSS meeting, the team develops an Action Plan containing goals, interventions, and a timeline for the plan's duration. Meetings are scheduled when necessary and monthly as indicated on the school calendar from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

The Role of Assessments in MTSS

Universal screenings in math and literacy are key components of our MTSS system. They provide us with a starting point for identifying students’ progress with foundational skills. The Cranbury School uses a variety of screeners and benchmark assessments to pinpoint where students are in their learning so we can provide appropriate instruction in support of their growth.

The results from the screeners and targeted benchmarks guide us in identifying tiered levels of support that students may need to develop a skill successfully. Every student is always in Tier 1, but some students may receive Tier 2 or Tier 3 support in addition to their regular classroom learning.

MTSS Tiers of Support

Tier 1

Core Instruction

All Students

High-quality, engaging teaching provided by the classroom teacher to the whole class.

Tier 2

Strategic Support

Some Students

Extra small-group instruction that focuses on specific skills. This is provided a few times a week, either in the classroom or out, and progress is carefully monitored.

Tier 3

Intensive Support

Few Students

Highly focused, individualized instruction provided more frequently and for a longer duration to address significant skill gaps or enrichment needs.

Progress Monitoring and Communication

We will communicate with you about your child's progress and the specific supports being provided through conferences, email and/or phone calls, as well as with report cards. Please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers with any questions.
