Today's Goal: Friday Conferences

Today we will continue our Epic book conferences with our Friday groups. The rest of the time, you should be working on reading and PINing and/or composing your letter to your 8th grade graduating self (in the Classwork tab). Make it good--it is a future present to yourself!!!!

As stated, for this week you should ideally have read and PINned your whole book by your conference. Have your google doc ready (and on your screens) for when we conference. Let us know where you are with your reading in your conference or through email. We'd rather you have good notes and understand your reading rather than speed through your reading without getting it or enjoying it.

Please double check the posted conference chart for your time.

Hello Lovelies!

Today we will briefly meet on a Google Meet at 10:15am to have a quick review of the 4 most common figures of speech: simile, metaphor, personification, and symbol. Then, you will complete a handout/chart (under Classwork) sharing and explaining a figure of speech that you found in a song.

Don't forget to do your 10 minutes of Membean. With the rest of your time, read, read, read!

Coming Attractions: Ms. Neitheimer and I will conference with our Friday book reading groups tomorrow between 10:15-11:00am. Please be punctual and have your shared Google Doc ready. You should have read and PINned at least ⅓ of the book.

OPTIONAL: The English teachers are so wowed by your “This I Believe” essays that we want to share your work with the rest of the school community! Please email your English teacher if you would be interested in shining the spotlight on your “This I Believe” essay, whether in a future Wingman newsletter or Cranbury School Some Good News broadcast.

Figures of Speech in Songs

Now that you have read a Newsela article about metaphors in popular songs, and now that you have reviewed the chart of 4 common figures of speech (including metaphors), you will find your own example of a figure of speech in a song you like.

To complete this exercise you must:

Identify the title of the song (and singer, if you know).

Type or copy and paste the lyrics that contain the figure of speech. Focus on one of the common ones on the chart (simile, metaphor, personification, or symbol).

Identify what figure of speech is being used (simile, metaphor, personification, or symbol).

Fully and clearly explain what is being compared to what, and why.

Today's Goal: Review of Plot, Setting, and Mood to Note While Reading

Good Morning, Epic Ones!

Today we will start reviewing elements of fiction in order to remind ourselves to be aware of them as we read and PIN (Post-It Note). Along with taking signpost notes (or PINs) on your shared Google Docs, you want to keep an eye out for literary elements. It would be a good idea to take Google Doc notes about literary elements too.

You have a plot and setting review sheet linked below as a reminder. I know that you are fabulous at identifying plot points, but maybe some of us might need a reminder about types of conflict, or that setting includes the time period, for example. If you can, take a look at the definitions of plot and setting on the linked sheet to remind yourself before we Google Meet. Be ready with any questions. Once we log onto our Google Hangout, we will watch a short Brainpop video about plot and address any further plot questions. Then we will watch an even shorter Scholastic video about mood (which falls under setting).

Today's Goal: Book Club Beginnings!

We will start Reading Club conferences on Monday (Mondays and Fridays).

If you did not finish chunking out your reading parts with your group or completing your reading goals worksheet, please do that first before getting to today's tasks.

Then, for today:

1. Sign up for a group conference slot. (One group member can be the designated signer-upper.)

2. Begin reading. Even though we’re reading online, you should still take (Signpost-esque) notes as you read.

3. I would like you to take notes on a shared group Google Doc. Use different colors to show who is taking what notes. Have these notes ready to share with me when we meet in our 8 minute conference every week. (Be sure to label chapter/page numbers for easy reference.) Feel free to use any of the Google documents shared below for your group's note-taking. Make your own copy and then share it with your group-mates.

4. Finally, watch the video attached below to help you to learn how to prepare for your book club meetings. It will also help you to learn how to be ready before your group conferences. (If you're having trouble viewing the video, feel free to join Mrs. Chen in the Google Meet at 10:15, where she'll share her screen and show the video.)

Today's Goal: Book Club Beginnings!

Hello Epic Readers!

Today we will get into our Reading Clubs more! Now that you have your books chosen and groups confirmed, You will spend some time communicating with your group members on the following tasks:

1. Set reading goals--both for yourself and your group, using the Reading Goals Chart in the Classwork tab. Think about some of the lessons we had with our nonfiction groups and see what might apply. For example, do you want to look up five new vocabulary words every week, or try to define words you don’t know through reading the context? Do you want finally to be able to identify static vs. dynamic characters? Do you struggle with identifying the theme and stating it in a full sentence? Or do you simply have a hard time reading a book without falling asleep? What’s your goal--what would you as a reader, and as a reading group, like to work towards improving as you read over the next month?

2. Take a few minutes with your group to break down your books into 4 chunks and make sure your partners know where they should have read up to by the following week’s conference. Use the Reading Chunks Chart in the Classwork tab to do this.(Conference Forms will be posted tomorrow morning. Each group should sign up for a 10 minute slot, to be held once a week until we finish Epic Reading Clubs.)

3. Start reading!

4. Remember your 10 minutes of Membean today! (20 by Tuesday)

Today's Goal: "Hoot" Finale

Here are some of the questions we would like to discuss in today’s Google Hangout:

1. Through much of the book, Roy feels like an outsider. What finally makes him feel that he belongs in Florida?
2. Do you think other characters feel like outcasts? Which ones? Why would they feel like this?
3. Mullet Fingers shows Roy a great spot to get away and relax away from the stress of school and family. Do you have a place like this? Describe your place, or how you would like your place to be.
4. Mullet Fingers earned his nickname from his ability to catch a mullet fish with his bare hands. Think of a special talent you have. What nickname could you give yourself based on this talent?
5. If you could write yourself into this book, where/how would you fit in?
6. At the end of the novel, Roy begins to feel more at home in Florida. Why do you think this is? What makes you feel at home somewhere?
7. "Hoot" has been made into a movie. How do you think a movie would enhance this story? How might it hurt this story?

Please log onto our Google Hangout by clicking on the link below. After you have logged on, I will ask you to journal-write for a few minutes about one of the above questions, in anticipation of sharing your answers during the discussion.

Use this checklist as a starting place to choose your book!

What information can you learn about the book from its cover? What does the cover tell you?
What types of characters do you think this story will include?
What genre (type of fiction) is this book?
Open to the first few pages, and begin reading to find out if you like the author’s style?
Is the author someone you know?
Is there a character conversation from anywhere in the book that you can preview and read that will tell you something more about whether you like about this book?

You can use the bottom of this form to 1.) write down the names of books that catch your eye as you’re scrolling. 2.) Rate the book on a scale of 1 to 10 as you go, to help you keep track of your favorites as you shop:

Today's Goal: "This I Believe" Writing & Book "Shopping" for Book Clubs

Hello, Sensational Sixth Graders!

Now that we are finishing our essays, we are charging ahead with reading. So for today, along with
1.) completing the essay (due at 3:15pm today) and
2.) practicing at least 10 minutes of Membean, we are
3.) asking you to spend some time “Book Shopping.”

For the next month, sixth graders will get to choose a book from GETEPIC.com. Many of your activities will be designed to get you to “talk” about books! Now that you've all taken part in book clubs, you’ve had the experience of sharing a great book with a friend, and finding out that it comes alive in new ways and it helps us get more out of our reading!

Log into www.getepic.com, and using your
school email addresses, as well as our class code (avh9274) for Epic, log into our class’s Epic Classroom.

We made a “getting acquainted” checklist of questions to help you with your book dating.
Book "shopping" is the same as getting to know your book. This list reminds you of what to do. You should take your time when you choose it. If you choose right, you will love every minute of your journey and look forward to reading every day!
Please complete this checklist as you review books. You can find your own copy of this handout on the Classwork tab where you can take some notes as you’re browsing.

Your task today is to fill in the "Chen Reading Workshop Book Selection Sign Up" Form. You should choose at least 3 books that interest you and fill this in before we meet tomorrow. Next, your teachers will let you know who you are working with and which book you’ll be reading.

**Optional enrichment: we created a Flipgrid board on which you can read your This I Believe essay aloud. This is a fun way to see each other and share your hard work!
