New Teacher Induction

Elements of the New Teacher Induction Program

New Staff Orientation: A two-day orientation is held annually for newly hired staff members to provide a thorough introduction to school culture, policies, and expectations. At the orientation, you will meet with the administrative team of our district, have opportunities to ask questions, and time to get to know your new colleagues. The orientation covers the most important aspects of what you need to know to get started.

New Teacher Induction: Our district believes that great teachers are made over time, through ongoing professional development, rigorous study of curriculum and instructional strategies, and by being part of a thriving, supportive professional environment. To this end, our four-year induction program is designed to provide the support needed for all new teachers to be successful. Monthly cohort meetings are differentiated, allow for staff choice, and provide meaningful training throughout years 1-4. The Portfolio Project is intended to function as a written artifact and to compliment the goals of the induction program. Through the portfolio activities, staff will engage in written reflection and share areas of professional growth.

Mentoring: The district follows the NJDOE Mentoring guidelines for all provisional teaching staff. Additionally, the district provides a Professional Partner for all newly hired teaching staff who arrive at the district with previous teaching experience. The Mentoring resources are designated for provisional teaching staff in the process of earning their CEAS. All mentors attend training provided by the district and submit mentor logs at the conclusion of the program.

Professional Learning and Teacher Evaluation

All staff are evaluated following the guidance of NJDOE Teacher Evaluation: Achieve NJ. The district’s evaluation system is based on the Danielson Framework for Teaching, a research-based set of components grounded in a constructivist view of learning and teaching. This framework is designed to support student achievement and professional best-practice. The complex activity of teaching is divided into multiple standards clustered into four domains of teaching responsibility:

1. Planning and Preparation
2. Classroom Environment
3. Instruction
4. Professional Responsibilities

Curriculum and Instruction

Rubicon Atlas: The district utilizes an online curriculum repository. Atlas changes the focus of curriculum work from documentation to a collaborative process for review and advancement.

Social Emotional Learning:  The district prioritizes several social emotional learning pathways to serve our students. The district believes that children thrive academically and can reach their fullest potential as human beings when they feel seen, known, loved, and understood at school.
