Assignments for Thursday, June 4, 2020

Happy (sort of) Friday! Today, our goals are to begin to collaborate on a theme analysis activity and to meet to finish our performance of the play.

Remember, theme is a message about life that is conveyed through the action of a story. While crafting a theme statement begins by examining the topics and motifs in a piece of literature, it is important to note that a theme is not expressed as one word. Rather it is a statement that explains what an author is saying about a topic through his/her work.

With that in mind, please complete the following assignments during this morning’s class:
1. 10 minutes of Membean
2. Choose a partner (or work solo) and review both the guidelines/template for the attached theme analysis assignment and the theme topic sign-up sheet. Sign up for a theme topic you and your partner want to analyze and develop. The completed slides for your chosen theme are due Monday by 3:15 pm.

For this afternoon, we will meet promptly at noon to finish the play. Please sign up for a part f you have not already. This is your last chance in 8th grade to be a Shakespearean star!

See you at noon 😃

Midsummer Character Casting in Google Classroom

Midsummer Character Casting

Directions: A casting director for film or a major theatrical production is typically hired to provide guidance and expertise to the director and producers. In order to keep getting hired, a good casting director needs to protect his/her reputation by bringing in the best actors for particular roles. Today, you will be a casting director for the next Broadway production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream! The production team, English Enterprises, has specified that at the auditions, they want to see young, diverse, talented actors with a serious resume for the roles of Hermia, Helena, Demetrius, and Lysander, as modern audiences tend to get these characters confused. Bonus if the actors are popular enough to bring in huge crowds!

In the spaces below each character, copy and paste a picture of the best current actor for the role that meets the expectations of the production team. Then, write a paragraph for each actor/role, defending your casting choice. The paragraph should be a minimum of 6 sentences and should highlight the actor’s experience, work ethic, look, and talent, as connected to the demands (characterization) of the particular role. Your job depends on your best effort!

** You may work with a partner or solo on this task. **

A Midsummer Night's Dream Character Letter Exchange in Google Classroom

A Midsummer Night's Dream Character Letter Exchange

For this assignment, you and a partner will be asked to write-in-role to each other as characters from the play. Think about characters of which you would like to explore the innermost thoughts and which characters you would like to see communicate with each other. For example, is Hippolyta struggling with doubts about the wedding that she needs to share with Theseus? Does Helena write a desperate love letter to Demetrius? Does Lysander write a letter of appeal to Egeus asking for Hermia’s hand in marriage? There are many possibilities! Whichever character pairing you choose, your letters should be based on both evidence from the text and your imagination.

Complete your letter exchange by following these steps:

Select a partner and assign a character to each of you to write-in-role (write your letter from the point of view of your chosen character). One partner’s character will write the first letter; the second partner’s character will write a reply letter.
Decide which partner will write a letter first. This letter should:
Be written to your partner’s character
Be at least two well-developed paragraphs
Explain the current conflict(s) for the character and his/her feelings about the conflict(s)
Either appeal for help or offer proposed solutions to the current problem
Make clear the relationship between the writer and recipient through the use of details from the play
Include some Shakespearean words/phrases from the play
Once the first letter is complete, the first writer shares it through Drive with his/her partner. The second writer, on the same document, should craft a reply letter, also of at least two well-developed paragraphs. This letter should:
Include an acknowledgment of the thoughts/feelings of the character in the first letter
Include a description of your own character’s current conflict(s) and feelings
Include either an offer or refusal of help, or the character’s counter offer of proposed solutions to the problems.
Make clear the relationship between the writer and recipient through the use of details from the play
Include some Shakespearean words/phrases from the play
When both letters are complete, upload the document through the assignment tab on Classroom.

This assignment is meant to activate your imagination and flex your creative writing skills! Have fun by allowing yourself to think and feel as your chosen characters would.

*Prefer to work solo? No problem- you should just write each letter yourself, from the points of view of two different characters.

Happy Friday! Time to work the creative side of thy brain. Review thine options below. These projects can be uploadeth through this post or on yonder Flipgrid, depending on thy choice. This project should be completeth by Monday eve.You may work with a partner if you would like!

1. Create a soundscape of music and/or sound effects that would support the mood and atmosphere of magic in the play. Imagine you are creating the sound design for the woods in a production of the play. You can create an edited sound file in GarageBand, iMovie, or simply play music and create sounds while recording in Flipgrid. Writing/performing an original song would be wonderful, too!
2. Create a visual representation of either the magical woods, the “rude mechanicals” rehearsing, or the mixed up love quadrangle.
If you paint or draw, upload a picture of your work, or show off your work in a video on Flipgrid. Otherwise, a digital collage of curated images could work.
3. Choose to perform one of the monologues or short scenes between 2 characters (with a partner filmed with split screen) we have studied so far. Upload your dynamic performance to Flipgrid or upload your video through this post.

Today's Goal: Getting to Know Elizabethan Theatre

Greetings, Shakespeare Scholars! Today, our goal is to travel back in time to the world of Elizabethan theatre, wherein Shakespeare’s plays flourished and audiences of rich and poor alike flocked to see them. As you explore each material, consider how such an experience in Shakespeare’s time differed from seeing a play or a movie today. You’ll be comparing and contrasting these experiences once you’ve learned more about the famed Globe Theater and the audiences that participated in the drama.

** FYI: We will be gathering on Google Meet tomorrow (Thurs. 5/7) at NOON to begin reading A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I planned an afternoon Meet with the expectation that you will be awake, with your camera and microphone on, ready to have fun with this humorous play!

For today, please complete the following (This can all be found in the Classwork tab as an assignment.):

1. Brush up on the elements of drama by viewing the Elements of Drama Slideshow.
2.Get to know the Globe Theater! Please review the attached Globe Theatre fact sheet, experience the Globe virtual tour, and watch the Globe history video clip from PBS.
3. Learn more about the audiences in Shakespeare’s time by reviewing the Audience fact sheet and watch the short video on The Globe and Its Audience.
4. Now that you’ve built some background knowledge, please complete the Globe Theater Compare/Contrast activity.
5. Sign Up for a role for our reading of Act I, sc. 1! If we do not have enough actors, I will have to assign roles, so do me a solid and sign up!

Today's Goal: Getting to Know Shakespeare's Language

Today, our goal is to enter the brave new world of studying Shakespeare’s language!

Shakespeare’s extraordinary linguistic abilities resulted in his designation as one of the greatest writers in the English language. In fact, Shakespeare invented many of the words and phrases that we still use today. But- what did his language look and sound like? Why was it so special?

Let’s break the ice and explore the following resources to learn more about Shakespeare’s use of language. In doing so, you’ll soon say good riddance to any doubts you have about understanding his work!

1. Brush up on your own linguistic abilities by practicing Membean for 10 minutes.
2. View the Flocabulary video “Shakespeare is Hip Hop”
3. Try to spot/annotate the words/phrases Shakespeare invented in this Newsela article/game. (answer key is linked on the bottom of the page). The BBC article linked below is also helpful!
4. Review the documents in the attached DocHub PDF, “Shakespeare’s Language”
5. In the attached shared document, write a paragraph, either independently or with a partner, that includes as many words/phrases from Shakespeare as possible (it still has to make sense!). Today's Goal: Continue Peer Review of UDHR Rough Drafts

Description:
Take the first 5-10 minutes of class time to complete the GUM lesson(s) on Its/It's & Who's/Whose. Then, email a photo of your completed work to Mrs. Chen.

Mrs. Chen will be in Google Meet during our usual early dismissal class time of 8:30am - 9:30am to help with any questions you may have while completing your peer review, including how to fill out the peer review form, how to do a peer review on Google Docs, how to use suggesting mode, or how to make comments. Joining the Meet is optional, but it will be more helpful than simply diving into the activity.

Click on the classwork tab of our Google Classroom and scroll down to the UDHR section. Locate the assignment "UDHR Rough Draft Peer Review". Note who your partner is. Let Mrs. Chen know through either email or Google Meet if your partner is not present (Hasn't checked in on Google Meet or Classroom). Open the document "UDHR Peer Review." Type your name in the center where it says "EDITOR'S NAME" & type in your partner's name where it says "WRITER'S NAME." Preview the questions you will answer on the peer review document.

Share your rough draft with your partner. Locate, through either email or Drive, the rough draft your partner shared with you. Open up the document, & switch it from editing mode to suggesting mode. This can be done by clicking the pencil icon in the upper right corner of the document's menu, below the share button.

Reading over your partner's paper, make suggestions and comments for how to improve the draft, based on what the peer review document asks for. Don't forget to answer the questions in the peer review document. Turn in the peer review document when you are finished so that they can be distributed by Mrs. Chen back to the writers.

Attendance Question:
What is something you've done recently to keep from feeling cooped up?
Ex: Mrs. Chen has been taking Bianca on walks more frequently, and calling friends and family to check in on them.
