Science Fiction Peer Review in Google Classroom

Science Fiction Peer Review

Similar to the job analyzing science fiction stories read in class, now it is time to turn that keen eye for detail toward the work of your classmates by examining and constructively critiquing their science fiction stories in progress.

Please complete the following tasks to earn full credit for this assignment:
1. Share your draft and your prewriting (both of which can be seen by your teacher) with your peer review partner. Make sure both are shared on “Suggesting Mode” so your partner can make comments and viewable edits on your work.
2. Read over both your partner’s draft.
3. While reading the draft, complete the following tasks in order of priority:
a. Answer the questions about your partner’s draft on this document, using as much detail as possible.
b. Comment on your partner’s draft to point out places in the story that could be confusing for readers or better constructed. Be sure to comment with praise where deserved as well, but be detailed here too, so your partner knows what they did well so they can keep up the good work!
c. Suggest edits for your partner’s draft in terms of grammar, punctuation, dialogue formatting, capitalization, etc.
4. Read over your partner’s prewriting. It is perfectly fine if there are differences between the prewriting and the draft. That’s why we call it the writing process. Do not worry about editing the prewriting, but take a quick look at it to see if your partner left out details worth including in the draft. (Note: If your partner is only able to share their prewriting with you, then this is the document you should use to answer the questions below.)
5. Share this document with your partner so they can use your suggestions and critiques to improve their story draft.

Once you’ve completed the steps on this list, it’s time to get to revising your own story draft, due by the end of the day Tuesday, 06/09/2020.

Science Fiction Story Prewriting in Google Classroom

Science Fiction Story Prewriting

Now, it’s your turn to create your own science fiction short story. First, take a look back at your notes from all the stories we’ve read and performed in this unit so far. Take what inspires you as a writer from each of the authors you’ve already learned from: Bradbury’s description, Shelley’s character development, Asimov’s frame story, Wells’ big ideas, Welles’ suspense and sensationalism. Use their writing and other stories of science fiction you already know and love to create your own brand new science fiction story (Sorry, this is not the assignment for continuing a story you already read, or creating fan-fiction. This one is all you!).

You must remember all of the elements of a short story in your writing. Remember that good stories must include all of the elements of plot, set the mood through detailed description, and offer interesting and believable characters (but just a few). Your story must have a specific conflict that is resolved in the end, a theme that is a life lesson that can be used in real life, and clear science fiction elements.

Today’s Goal: Prewriting due, Drafting

Take a couple minutes to fill out the shared SWBST chart so we can see a preview of your science fiction story and where you are as you begin drafting. If you have trouble filling out the chart, that may be a sign that you’re struggling with your plot or characters and a cue that you should have a conversation about your writing with Mrs. Chen to help you through it.

Drafts are due by class time on Thursday (06/04/2020), as we will be doing a peer review activity for class that day (No, partner reservations will not be taken.). Be sure to draft your science fiction story by accessing the assignment in the Classwork tab of Classroom. This way Mrs. Chen can see your story as you build it and can make suggestions during the process.

Don't forget to do 10 minutes of Membean today!

Have another dose of wisdom from Octavia E. Butler, titan of science fiction:

“First forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you’re inspired or not. Habit will help you finish and polish your stories. Inspiration won’t. Habit is persistence in practice.”

Today’s Goal: Prewriting & Drafting

Salutations, Scions of Sci Fi! Let’s take today to finish our prewriting and begin drafting. Remember, your prewriting Google Doc should contain as much detail as possible so that your reader can explore the new world and meet the new characters you are creating. This takes time, focus, and words, words, words!

Mrs. Chen is available on Google Meet to conference about your writing if you’d like to talk through some ideas with her or brainstorm.

Before you go, take some inspiration from a few fellow makers of science fiction.

“Remember, science fiction’s always been the kind of first level alert to think about things to come. It’s easier for an audience to take warnings from sci-fi without feeling that we’re preaching to them. Every science fiction movie I have ever seen, any one that’s worth its weight in celluloid, warns us about things that ultimately come true.” - Steven Spielberg

“Science fiction, outside of poetry, is the only literary field which has no limits, no parameters whatsoever. You can go not only into the future, but into that wonderful place called other, which is simply another universe, another planet, another species.” - Theodore Sturgeon

“I was attracted to science fiction because it was so wide open. I was able to do anything and there were no walls to hem you in and there was no human condition that you were stopped from examining.” - Octavia E. Butler

Today’s Goal: Themes of Science Fiction

After taking care of Membean practice for 10 minutes, let’s gather in Google Meet at 9:40 to go over today’s activity on theme. Each of the science fiction stories we’ve covered so far deals with a very real message the author wanted readers to take to heart, a message that may have nothing to do with robots or aliens or monsters, but everything to do with our own humanity and the future.

Today, you (and a partner) will choose one of the stories we’ve read and dig through it to discover the story’s theme, using the assignment:
Analyzing a Science Fiction Story’s Theme. This is a shared document, so be on your best tech behavior! Our finished work on this will be a resource we can use when we begin writing our sci-fi stories on Thursday!
Created: Tuesday, May 26 2:40 PM

Analyzing a Science Fiction Story's Theme in Google Classroom

Analyzing a Science Fiction Story's Theme

Use the signup sheet below to pick out the story whose theme you and a partner will analyze. This means that you will spend time today to do the following:

-Access your chosen story once again.
-In the chart for your chosen story, use direct evidence (QUOTES!) and specific examples from the story to answer the questions on theme.
-Remember that the theme is a life lesson that is at least a sentence-length idea that the reader can take away into their own life after they are finished reading. This means that a theme is not “Robots aren’t so bad,” or “robots,” but rather it could be “Friendship can be found in unlikely situations that others should not rush to judge.”

This document will be used as a resource for theme once we begin crafting our own science fiction short stories.

>>>This is a shared document, so any nonsense will result in the nonsense maker getting the last pick of available stories and an email home. If someone else’s name is already signed up for a particular story, you can join their group or move to another story. <<<

Today’s Goal: Orson Welles’ 1938 “War of the Worlds” Broadcast

Did you know that our little corner of the universe has its own honored place in the history of science fiction? Just over 5 miles away from Cranbury School, a neighborhood of West Windsor called Grover’s Mill was witness to an alien invasion over 80 years ago!

1. Read the Atlas Obscura entry on the “War of the Worlds” Monument. If you’re looking for a place to get out to this weekend, Van Nest Park is a great spot to get some fresh air while finding out about this bit of New Jersey and science fiction history. **Make sure you and your family practice safe social distancing from both invading aliens and people not from your household while you’re out.**
2. Then, we’ll meet together in Google Meet today at 9:40 to listen to a RadioLab podcast about
Orson Welles’ 1938 War of the Worlds Broadcast.
3. While we listen, answer the questions on the assigned Google Doc (in the Classwork tab).

Today’s Goal: Getting to Know H.G. Wells & Big Ideas Set in Science Fiction with “The Time Machine”

We’ve been traveling up and down the timeline of science fiction in the past few weeks. We visited the late 1940s and early 1950s with Ray Bradbury, then traveled back to the early 1800s to see the arguable creation of the genre, Frankenstein, and his creature, thanks to Mary Shelley. We then shot back to the future and the golden age of science fiction with Isaac Asimov and his robot friends and foes. But the concept of time travel itself would not exist without this titan of sci-fi: H.G. Wells.

Here’s what we’re up to today:
1. Read and annotate the Newsela article “The thrill of time travel.” Then, take the quiz.
2. View the biography of H.G. Wells on Edpuzzle (https://edpuzzle.com/media/5ebaee11c9ccf63f06864abe). You can use your school Google login information to log in.
3. Read the Get Epic! comic adaptation of “The Time Machine”. Log into www.getepic.com, and using your
school email addresses, as well as our Class code for Epic (avh9274), log into our Class’s Epic Classroom. Find your mailbox and in it will be the assignment containing the comic version of “The Time Machine”. Mrs. Chen will be available through Google Meet and/or email if you have any trouble logging on to this new reading tool.
4. When finished reading the comic, answer one of the following questions for ATTENDANCE in a complete sentence:
- What beliefs does Wells try to inform his reader of in this story? Explain why you do or do not agree with them.
- Explain why discussing one's beliefs in a genre like science fiction may make audiences more willing to consider them than if they were presented plainly in a genre like an essay or opinion article?
5. Sign up for a part in the dramatized version of another of Wells’ stories we will be reading for class tomorrow.

This quick story to begin this collection of short stories is what is called a “frame story,” also known as a “frame tale” or “frame narrative. Dictionary.com defines a frame story as: “a narrative providing the framework for connecting a series of otherwise unrelated stories.” This idea, of stories within a bigger story, is important to keep in mind as we begin reading this collection.
